Fuel Cell Removal

Fuel cell removal was a bit of a chore. It just didn't want to slide out. Turns out that some clear silicone had oozed through the aluminum container joints and "glued" it into place a little bit. Some persistent tugging and running a wooden yardstick all around the bottom and sides freed it up. And out it came.

Do a google on the maker of this cell, and you get some real colorful racing history. Donn Allen was a fixture in the racing scene for many years. Apparently his family contined (s?) the business. See more at: http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=112669

The cell is in really good shape, and I am wondering if it wasn't resealed at some point. It has no blemishes and is almost like new.

Looking at the HPD manual, I am hopeful that I can slide the new pump and regulator into the apature already in place for the existing fuel pickup with minimal mods. (I guess that waits to be seen when the parts arrive).

Fuel cell enclosure is also very well done with all of the surfaces carefully covered in thick felt like material to mimimize the opportunity for chafing. Hopefully this will be one of the easier parts of the conversion process.

With a close fought battle for the National Football Championship on the TV in the garage, it was a short night of work. Congratulations to Auburn on a hard fought win.

Tomorrow on to suspension removal...
